Percy Jackson & The Olympians author Rick Riordan has announced that a film adaptation of his Egyptian mythology-inspired trilogy, The Kane Chronicles, is currently in the works at Netflix. The announcement comes just several months after it was revealed that a Percy Jackson show is being produced for Disney+, with an intended release in 2022.
Riordan announced the Netflix Kane Chronicles series on his personal website, where he claimed that he’s been in talks about the project for close to a year. The trilogy of books, which follows the mythological adventures of modern-day siblings Carter and Sadie Kane, will be adapted into “feature films,” according to Riordan, suggesting that each of the three—The Red Pyramid, The Throne of Fire, and The Serpent’s Shadow—are planned to be adapted and released in turn. You can read Riordan’s full statement below.
“Hey, guys! An exciting announcement as posted on social media concerning the Kane Chronicles: We are developing the series for feature films on Netflix! We have been working on this deal since last October, about the same time we started working on Percy, and I’m so glad I can now announce it! That’s all I can say for the moment, but stay tuned. I will try to answer some questions during the Tower of Nero tour events.”
Given that The Kane Chronicles is set in the same universe as Percy Jackson and Riordan’s Nordic-themed Magnus Chase series, it may be disappointing for fans to hear that the Egyptian saga will be developed by Netflix, and will therefore be disconnected from the upcoming Percy Jackson series on Disney+. While there is little direct overlap in the stories of the books, the film adaptations could have been ripe for crossovers. Regardless, the announcement is sure to excite readers who’ve fallen in love with Riordan’s ever-expanding mythological fantasy franchise. Hopefully, The Kane Chronicles will be received better than the Percy Jackson films.
