A French retailer appears to have accidentally revealed that pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 will start today with a series of advertisements in its stores, ahead of an official announcement from Sony regarding the next-gen console at today’s PS5 Showcase. Sony is expected to reveal key information at the event, which should entail both the price and launch date of the system. Of course, pre-order details are bound to accompany those all-important facts.
The PS5 has been the subject of a number of leaks over the last few weeks. This is likely due to the lack of information from Sony, with the company being incredibly secretive about its release plans for the console. Earlier today, a Spanish retailer listed the two confirmed versions of the console in its internal inventory system. The listings for the Standard and Digital Editions included price information that suggests the consoles will cost $499 and $399, respectively. However, whether these prices are accurate is still unknown as they could just be placeholders until Sony unveils the price.
As anticipation builds for the Sony’s PlayStation 5 showcase this evening, it appears as if another retailer has prematurely leaked another key piece of information. French electronics retailer Fnac, as reported by Frandroid and translated by GamesRadar, has prepared advertisements that seem to confirm customers will be able to pre-order the console from today. Such marketing material usually takes some time to put together so it suggests that Fnac has had advance warning from Sony and that it is preparing for the official announcement later today. That will mean the PS5 can potentially be pre-ordered almost a week in advance of the Xbox Series X and S consoles.
The PlayStation 5 showcase today comes amid rising concerns that production of the console has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The company faced allegations earlier this week that some four million fewer units than was initially planned would be available at launch. According to rumors, this was due to a shortage of some key components used in the assembly of the system. But Sony has denied these claims and stated that the production number for the PS5 remains unchanged.
As is the case with all leaks, there should be some caution about just how accurate the information really is. Retailers are renowned for not having up-to-date information in their systems and promotional material might have been created months ago in anticipation for a date that is no longer feasible. However, the fact that the stores are displaying the advertising likely means that the pre-order claims are true, especially with the PlayStation 5 showcase just hours away.
